It’s not usually a bad idea to bet against bad teams, and these are a couple of our favorites this week.
New Orleans Saints -5.5 (-110) at Atlanta Falcons
People often forget that the New Orleans Saints looked promising last season before quarterback Jameis Winston went down. The Saints started the season 5-2 with Winston under center and outscored their opponents 176-128.
They’re now healthy and have many new weapons to complement a ferocious defense. New Orleans selected wide receiver Chris Olave in the first round to take the top off and added sure-handed slot-man Jarvis Landry to make contested catches over the middle. They’re also banking on a healthy Michael Thomas, who hasn’t played football in two years but is one of the best when he’s out there.
Meanwhile, the Atlanta Falcons are a mess. You’re unlikely to find any analyst not ranking the Falcons in the bottom three of the league this year, as the team is in a clear rebuild. Calvin Ridley is suspended for gambling, their top running back is a converted wide receiver, and Marcus Mariota is their quarterback. Yikes.
