South Carolina spoiled Tennessee’s season, defeating the fifth-ranked Vols, 66-38, at Williams-Brice Stadium Saturday night.

The Gamecocks are on Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney’s mind ahead of the Tigers’ regular season finale against its instate rival. Clemson is looking to end the regular season 11-1 by earning its seventh straight win over South Carolina.

On his local radio show Monday night, Swinney commented that South Carolina quarterback Spencer Rattler had forever to throw against the Vols and added that  “Tennessee is not built defensively, they’re built to outscore people.”

Swinney credited South Carolina for controlling the game while casting doubt on Tennessee ever being a playoff quality team.

Clemson needed a miracle to make the College Football Playoff entering last week’s games but Tennessee’s loss has opened a window for the Tigers. Swinney’s Tigers will need losses from both TCU and USC down the stretch of the season.

Swinney — always a proponent of the ACC and basher of non SEC Champions — used Tennessee’s loss against South Carolina to take a shot at the Vols and the privilege of one-loss SEC teams.

“They’re flipping burgers during the conference championship weekend, like are we going to Atlanta or Phoenix, and next thing you know you forget you gotta go play,” Swinney said.

If the breaks go Clemson’s way and they beat South Carolina and North Carolina,  the Tigers could make the playoff for the seventh time.

The Tigers regular season finale kicks off at noon ET Saturday. Tennessee’s regular season finale against Vanderbilt kicks off at 7:30 p.m. ET Saturday. Tom Hart, Jordan Rodgers and Cole Cubelic are on the call for SEC Network.

  1. Clemson has been VERY lucky to win what they have this year, squeezing by. They are nowhere near a championship caliber team, and as well as they played against Tennessee, I’ll take SC for the win.

  2. Did Tenn coaches comment when Sir Dabo forgot how to play against st Notre Dame?
