Sports Betting in Massachusetts

Massachusetts residents could only place bets in person for the Super Bowl at the state’s three retail sportsbooks, and residents still wagered more than $7 million on the big game. Projections had the number a lot closer to $50 million had online sports betting been available. Additionally, residents bet more than a half-million dollars at retail sportsbooks on opening day. Given some of the early numbers, residents are eager to bet, and the industry is primed for a big boost when online sports betting launches.

Currently, 11 online sportsbooks have been granted licenses. Two of them (Betway and Fanatics) have already announced they won’t be available on launch day. Others will depend on their promptness in meeting the Massachusetts Gaming Commission’s (MGC) requests to ensure compliance leading up to go-live.

“It’s really dependent on the quality of the internal control submissions the applicants have submitted,” MGC Executive Director Karen Wells said at a recent MGC meeting. “If they have done a fantastic job and are good to go, we can get this done more quickly. But if they can’t respond or do not respond to modifications to internal control submissions, that impacts the timeline. We do have the option of launching some but not all of the operators.”
