Tennessee and head coach Josh Heupel received a commitment from class of 2024 defensive back Edrees Farooq on Sunday afternoon. The announcement comes just about 24 hours after Farooq attended Tennessee’s Orange & White spring football game from Neyland Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Farooq announced his commitment to Tennessee with a post on social media.

“110% committed,” Farooq wrote in the post.

Edrees Farooq is a 5-foot-11, 180-pound safety from St. Frances Academy in Baltimore, Maryland. Farooq comes from a football family with his cousin Jalil Farooq being a four-star receiver in the class of 2021 who signed with the University of Oklahoma.

Farooq is a consensus three-star prospect in the class of 2024 according to 247 Sports, Rivals, ESPN, and On3 Sports. Additionally, according to 247’s composite rankings, Farooq is listed as the No. 561 overall player in the class, the No. 47 safety in the class, and the No. 17 player from the state of Maryland.

Farooq has held offers from more than 30 programs throughout his recruitment. On Jan. 9, Farooq posted a Top 10 featuring Ohio State, Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, Michigan, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Maryland, Virginia Tech, Penn State, and Southern California.

The Maryland native is the second safety in Tennessee’s 2024 class and continues the Vols’ emphasis on recruiting defensive backs in the last few years. Tennessee signed three-star safeties John Slaughter and Jack Luttrell from the class of 2023 and brought in transfer safety Wesley Walker and three-star safety Jourdan Thomas in the class of 2022.

Edrees Farooq comes in as the sixth-highest player and the highest-ranked three-star out of the nine commits in Tennessee’s 2024 class. Farooq is the third defensive back in the class alongside four-star athlete/safety Marcus Goree Jr. and four-star cornerback Kaleb Beasley.
