Bracketology Update: Where Tennessee Baseball Stands A Month From NCAA Tournament

With the NCAA Baseball Tournament just one month away, Tennessee baseball is looking to secure its spot in the tournament as well as make a push to be one of the regional host sites.

The Vols enter their weekend series at Georgia with a 31-14 (11-10 SEC) record and a chance to bolster their hopes to host the opening weekend of the tournament. Typically 14 wins in SEC play is good enough to make the NCAA Tournament while 16 to 18 wins are typically needed to host a regional.

With nine conference games left, Tennessee is extremely likely to reach the 14 wins benchmark but would need to end the season strong to reach 16-18 wins.

So where does Tennessee stand in D1Baseball’s recent bracketology update?

The Vols are the two-seed in the Terre Haute Regional where they would face Iowa in the first game and would have to win the double-elimination tournament over the Hawkeyes, Indiana State and Central Michigan.

Indiana State is 29-13 (16-2 MVC) and is one of the best mid major teams in the country this season. The Sycamores have faced an abundance of power five opponents this season. Kentucky swept Indiana State. Iowa and Miami won solo games against the Sycamores. Indiana State split a pair of games with Indiana, won two games against Illinois and Purdue and beat Vanderbilt.

The Sycamores are the No. 16 overall seed in the NCAA Tournament meaning the winner of the Terre Haute Regional would face the winner of the Baton Rouge Regional— meaning a likely trip to LSU for the Super Regionals.

It also means D1Baseball views Tennessee as being right on the outside of earning a top 16 seed and hosting the opening weekend of the tournament.

The Vols return to the field Friday night as they open a three-game series at Georgia.
