NBA Playoff Preview for May 11

Big men have been leaving their mark across the board in the second round — from Philadelphia’s Joel Embiid and Denver’s Nikola Jokic to the Lakers’ Anthony Davis and Miami’s Bam Adebayo. Their teams are all on the verge of Conference Finals appearances thanks to them. However, if they are to hold on, they’ll need their teammates to continue to step up, especially in tonight’s games.

Boston Celtics at Philadelphia 76ers, 7:30 p.m. ET (ESPN) — Philly leads series 3-2

  • Point spread: Boston -2.5
  • Moneylines: Boston -138 | Philadelphia +118
  • Total (Over/Under): 212.5 points

For the first time during this playoff run, it seems Boston is feeling the impact of former coach Ime Udoka’s absence. From late-game blunders to blowout losses at home games, the Celtics haven’t been the same as of late. That doesn’t mean they are dead in the water just yet. They were in this same spot last year against the Bucks and won Games 6 and 7 to get to the NBA Finals.

Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown have been resilient in the face of adversity to this point in their careers, but it may not matter as Embiid appears to get healthier and healthier. The MVP has racked up 30 or more points in three consecutive games and is only getting better. Additionally, he has gotten plenty of help in the last two games from Tyrese Maxey and James Harden. It’s evident that Celtics head coach Joe Mazzulla still has much to learn in his new position, but you have to expect he knows enough to not allow Embiid the quality of looks he has seen lately in tonight’s potential elimination game.

To avoid a Game 7 on the road, Harden must have another vintage game. He hasn’t been the most reliable in his career, but he has come through when needed as of late. Philly is in the driver’s seat, and whether or not it seals the deal is solely in its hands.

Denver Nuggets at Phoenix Suns, 10 p.m. ET (ESPN) — Denver leads series 3-2

  • Point spread: Phoenix -3
  • Moneylines: Phoenix -146 | Denver +124
  • Total (Over/Under): 226 points

The Nuggets finally slowed down Kevin Durant and Devin Booker in Game 5. The timing couldn’t have been any better for them considering the circumstances. The Joker had a triple-double to lead the way in the pivotal matchup, and as impressive as that was, the performance of his supporting cast was the story of the night.

Besides Jokic, Denver got 19-point performances from Jamal Murray and Michael Porter Jr., and a 25-point performance from Bruce Brown. Murray is a dependable scorer, but Porter Jr. and Brown aren’t nearly as consistent. It’s no guarantee they’ll be able to duplicate their performances on the road in Game 6, and if it gets to a Game 7, anything goes. The odds are in the Nugget’s favor, but this one still feels far from over.
