Tennessee baseball head coach Tony Vitello met with the media following the Vols’ 12-0 series-opening win over St. Bonaventure, reacting to the team’s combined no-hitter, Liam Doyle’s night and more.

Watch Vitello’s entire post-game press conference below.

“Yeah, I think some former teammates and guys that I coached at a young age — we’re friends now, more than anything — they’d get a kick out of it, so I’ll bring it up,” Vitello said on if he had ever been a part of or coached a no-hitter. “You remind me of one we had, and the team blamed it on the lights. But anyway, yeah, I’ve been a part of one.

“I didn’t realize what was going on. The guys got all excited there at the end. So, need to hire Don Zimmer, or somebody, to be the bench coach, because I guess Gavin (Kilen) was almost had the cycle (in Houston). I didn’t know that one either. But yeah, it’s a reflection of five guys, if I got that right, the burger. It might be an NIL deal with the burger company there. Five guys got out there and threw strikes and did what Coach A (Frank Anderson) is looking for them to do.”

Starting pitcher Liam Doyle was instrumental in the Vols’ recording their fourth team no-hitter and ninth overall in history. Doyle struck out 13 batters and allowed just two baserunners, both via walk, which bookended a streak of 17 retired batters.

Tanner Franklin, Brandon Arvidson, Brayden May and Michael Sharman finished off the team no-hitter, with Arvidson being the only one to allow a baserunner.

Tennessee will look to clinch the series over St. Bonaventure Saturday in Knoxville at 6 p.m. ET.
