Tennessee Football Safety Reportedly Entering The Transfer Portal

Tennessee safety John Slaughter is entering the transfer portal after two years in Knoxville according to ESPN’s Pete Thamel.

Slaughter is a rising junior who played in 23 games in his two seasons at Tennessee. The 6-foot-2, 195-pound safety recorded six total tackles in his time with the Vols including with five of them coming during the 2024 season. Slaughter also intercepted a pass in Tennessee’s blowout win over Kent State.

A Southaven, Mississippi native, Slaughter was a part of Tennessee’s 2023 signing class. He committed to the Vols in June 2022 and ranked as a three-star recruit and the No. 599 player in the country according to the 247sports composite rankings.

Slaughter totaled 54 defensive snaps during the 2024 season, earning a 66.5 PFF grade. He didn’t record a single defensive snap in SEC play during his sophomore season.

Tennessee returns to of its top three safeties from a season ago in Andre Turrentine and Jakobe Thomas. Edrees Farooq, Christian Charles and maybe even Jourdan Thomas, depending on what position he ends up playing, would have been ahead of Slaughter on the Vols’ depth chart.

Slaughter is the second Tennessee football player to enter the transfer portal following spring practice, joining quarterback Nico Iamaleava who landed at UCLA on Wednesday.

  1. The transfer portal is totally ruining college sports. Now school don’t even look at high school athletes who bust there ass to get a scholarship to play college basketball and football.
