No. 15 Tennessee baseball (39-11, 15-10 SEC) is set to battle the No. 11 Vanderbilt Commodores (34-16, 14-11 SEC) Saturday in game two of a three-game series in Knoxville.

First pitch in Lindsey Nelson Stadium will be at 5:00 p.m. ET on ESPN.

ESPN2 will have the broadcast for game three.

Tennessee enters the game coming off a thrilling 3-2 series-opening win on Friday. Liam Doyle gave up just three hits and no walks in a scoreless seven innings pitched. The hard-throwing lefty dealt 12 strikeouts and threw 100 pitches, logging yet another dominant SEC start.

Hunter Ensley was also massive in the Vols’ win. The redshirt-senior went 2-4 at the plate and pulled off a brilliant slide to score a run in the seventh. He also made a ‘game-saving’ catch at the centerfield wall and made a sliding catch to end the game.

Tennessee entered the series struggling in SEC play, desperately needing a series win. The Vols have dropped four of the last five series and three straight at home, a first in the Tony Vitello era. Tennessee will aim to end that streak with a series-clinching win Saturday.

Friday was a good start to the weekend for the Vols. It puts them in much better position to avoid the NCAA Regional hosting bubble. A series win over Vandy should all but clinch that.

The Commodores enter the series with the same 14-10 SEC record as Tennessee, but they’ve done it differently. Vanderbilt has swept three opponents and has been swept by another. They’ve alternated series victories and losses the last six weekends with a thrilling home series win over Alabama last weekend.

Vanderbilt has a strong pitching staff. Out of the bullpen, Sawyer Hawks has posted a 1.26 ERA in 35.2 innings pitched and Alex Kranzler has posted a 3.38 ERA in 32 innings pitched.

Vanderbilt once again boasts an underwhelming offense. The Commodores rank outside the top 180 nationally in on-base percentage and outside the top 150 nationally in slugging percentage. But there are a few bats to know. Riley Nelson is hitting .361 with 17 extra-base hits. Brodie Johnson has blasted a team-best 10 home runs and 25 extra-base hits.

The most worrisome thing for Tennessee is how often Vanderbilt steals bases. RJ Austin has swiped 20, Jacob Humphrey has 16, Rustan Rigdon has 14 and Mike Mancini has 13. Tennessee pitchers largely struggle containing runners once they get on.

Tennessee has dominated the series against its in-state rival over the past three seasons, having won 10 of the 12 meetings between the two in that span, including nine consecutive victories prior to dropping the series finale in Nashville last season.

The Vols and Commodores faced off five times last year, including twice in Hoover. UT went 3-2 in those games, including a 6-4 win in the SEC Tournament semifinals en route to winning its second conference title in three years.

Prediction: Vanderbilt’s ability to steal bases at a high rate and great pitching staff worry me. On paper, Vanderbilt is the pick to win games two and three. But, ‘if not now, when?’ is where we’re at with this Tennessee team. It played determined baseball Friday, and I think they can eek out a series win.

It probably has to come Saturday, though, as Tennessee will likely struggle offensively against Vanderbilt’s Sunday starter, and the Vols’ Sunday pitching hasn’t been good as of late.

Vols win two of three (win Saturday).

Injury/Availability Notes
  • RHP AJ Russell is dealing with a blister and was not listed as the probable starter for Sunday. But he should be good to pitch this weekend as he was not listed on the availability report.
    • Not naming a Sunday starter also leaves the door open for Tennessee to start Tegan Kuhns who was great a week ago.
  • In game two against Kentucky, a foul ball unfortunately hit Tennessee relief pitcher Tanner Wiggins in the mouth. Tony Vitello said there were teeth involved in Wiggins’ injury, and the sophomore underwent surgery afterward on his jaw.
    • Read more about Wiggins’ status HERE.
  • UNC transfer first baseman Alberto Osuna remains ineligible.
    • But last Monday, Osuna again took legal action still seeking eligibility. Read more HERE.

Pitching notes:
  • Phillips bump day. He was average a week ago and great the week prior.
    • Dylan Loy shoved in a 3.2-inning relief performance last Saturday. Tennessee has a full bullpen behind Phillips today.
  • Bowker is Vandy’s worst weekend starter right now. He has a couple of good-to-great performances but has mostly been mediocre.
    • Doesn’t go far into games either. Has pitched more than 5.0 innings in SEC play just once (Auburn).
Uniforms

Tennessee: Home Whites (in an orange-out…)

Vanderbilt: Black & gold pinstripes

*NOTES*
