Tennessee baseball’s woes continued over the weekend as the Vols dropped their weekend series against rival Vanderbilt at Lindsey Nelson Stadium.
It marked Tennessee’s fourth straight series loss and its fifth series loss in the last six weeks. The Vols finished the regular season with a 1-4 record in SEC series at Lindsey Nelson Stadium. Tennessee hadn’t gone worse than 3-2 in home SEC series under Tony Vitello before this season.
Tennessee now enters the final week of the regular season with a 15-12 SEC record and in seventh place in the SEC ahead of the SEC Tournament in Hoover.
The Vols took the series opener over Vanderbilt on Friday thanks to a dominant outing from Liam Doyle and heroics from centerfielder Hunter Ensley at the plate, on the basepaths and in the field. But defensive issues, clutch hitting and base running woes plagued Tennessee in the final two games.
Vanderbilt took game two 10-6 in relatively convincing fashion before the Vols dropped a 7-5 heartbreaker, stranding the bases loaded in the ninth inning, in the series finale.
