Tennessee Football kicked off its summer recruiting news with a commitment from 2026 safety KJ McClain on Wednesday afternoon.

The 5-foot-11.5, 165-pound prospect is ranked as the No. 607 prospect in the class, the No. 47 safety in the class, and the No. 10 player from New Jersey, according to 247Sports’ Composite rankings.

Versatility is the name of the game for McClain’s talents. The three-star prospect shows off nice speed, physicality, and awareness in his highlights from his junior season at St. Joseph Regional in Montvale, NJ, during the 2024 season. There are also numerous examples of high IQ plays on his film, something that is certainly enticing to defensive coordinators Tim Banks and the Vols’ coaching staff.

While McClain is listed as a safety on the recruiting trail, his game could see him translate over to the STAR position or somewhere else in the secondary. There’s still plenty of time to get all of that worked out before his first meaningful snaps with the program down the road.
