On Saturday, former Tennessee football star Alvin Kamara had the opportunity to throw out the ceremonial first pitch for the Chicago Cubs.

It didn’t necessarily go as planned.

Kamara, a current New Orleans Saints running back in the NFL, bounced his first attempt well short of the plate. The Cubs’ mascot, Clark, made an incredible play on the ball to make a back-handed stop. Due to the less-than-desirable first result, Kamara hilariously asked for a second chance.

Pitch No. 2 went much better. It was a bit out of the zone, but Kamara dialed up a heater that made it to Clark on the fly for an easy catch.

Kamara presumably threw out the first pitch at the game due to his friendship with Cubs pitcher Justin Steele, who is a Saints fan. Before the first pitch, the pair shared a FaceTime call to talk things through. Steele wasn’t at the game in person due to him rehabbing an injury that’s holding him off the field.

This quick call might be to blame for Kamara’s first pitch hitting the dirt. Steele advised him to ‘hang it a lot lower than you’re anticipating.’ The idea was that it’s more common for the ball to sail if you try to throw it too hard.

Kamara seemingly took that advice a little too seriously, though.

Kamara’s first pitch stole most of the headlines from the afternoon at the ballpark for Cubs fans, though. Chicago dropped the match to the Cardinals, 8-6. However, fans were treated to home runs from Carson Kelly and Michael Busch.

For Kamara, he’s now enjoying his off-season before heading back to get to work with the Saints. This will be his ninth season in the NFL, all in New Orleans. So far in his career, he has produced 6,779 rushing yards and 60 scores on the ground. He’s also a threat through the air, racking up 4,762 receiving yards and 25 touchdowns.

He began his college career in a stacked running back recruiting class at Alabama. However, an injury shut him down and forced him to redshirt. After the season, he transferred to Hutchinson CC to continue his career. Following a breakout year, he transferred to Tennessee.

With the Vols, Kamara played two seasons, both under Butch Jones. There, he ran for a combined 1,294 yards and 16 touchdowns while posting 683 receiving yards and an additional seven scores. He would be drafted by the Saints in the third round with the 67th overall pick.
