Former Tennessee football wide receiver Squirrel White is hanging up his cleats. On Monday, White was moved to the reserve/retired list by the NFL’s Chicago Bears. He was picked up by the team after going undrafted in the 2026 NFL Draft.

White was set to begin his pro career after rounding out his college tenure this past season. After three years with the Vols, he transferred to Florida State for his senior year.

With the Seminoles, White appeared in 10 games. In this time, he caught five passes for 52 yards and no touchdowns. Each of these marks was a career low. He also ran the ball four times for six yards, was sacked and returned seven punts 64 yards.

White was a starter in the slot for Tennessee during its 2024 season that saw the Vols make the College Football Playoffs. However, he suffered an upper-body injury that limited him throughout the season. While gritting through to appear in 13 games, he caught 34 passes for 381 yards and two touchdowns.

2023, White’s sophomore campaign, was statistically his best. He notched career highs in receptions (67), receiving yards (803) and a tie for touchdowns (two). He also came up with a diving catch against South Carolina, perhaps the best reception of his career.

In 2022, as a freshman, White came off the bench behind Biletnikoff Award winner Jalin Hyatt. He still produced 30 receptions for 481 yards and two scores. This included a touchdown in the Orange Bowl win, with Hyatt opting out of the game.

White is from Birmingham, Alabama, and attended Clay-Chalkville High School. On3 considered White a four-star prospect while Rivals, 247 and ESPN rated him as a three-star recruit.

While White goes by Squirrel, his real name is Marquarius. He was handed the nickname by his great-grandmother as an infant after he moved simultaneously with a squirrel in her garden.
