It’s spooky season on Rocky Top, meaning that Tennessee will officially be breaking out its Dark Mode all-black uniforms for this Saturday’s critical SEC matchup against No. 18 Oklahoma in Neyland Stadium.
While Tennessee fans can be hit-or-miss on straying away from the classic tradition of the orange-and-white, the all-black threads have captured more consistent attention and praise than some of the other alternate Smokey Greys that are brought out each season.
Since the inception of the all-black uniforms, the Dark Mode theme has become a staple for fans once a week during the Tennessee football season.
ESPN put out a list of the best Week 10 college football uniforms on display this weekend, with Tennessee’s Dark Mode threads landing its own section.
“It’s Halloweekend in Knoxville, and Tennessee is entertaining the spooky vibes by donning its Dark Mode uniforms for a marquee showdown against Oklahoma,” ESPN writes. “Few teams can do an all-black alternate like the Volunteers, who are trading the white in their classic orange-and-white swatches for a black base throughout. Highlights of the alternate threads include a wide orange helmet stripe and bright matching numbers and accents.”

Tennessee won’t be the only team bringing out the Grim Reaper look this Saturday. Nebraska, who appears to be taking a page out of Texas A&M’s playbook with the colorless black-and-white look, will also be rocking its own blacked-out alternate uniforms for its game against Southern Cal.

Other notable threads that are being broken out this week on ESPN’s list include North Carolina’s throwback uniforms with 3D block lettering and new helmets from both Ole Miss and Utah.
