A strange game, played under strange circumstances was the stage for a strange twist in a strange quarterback controversy. Erik Ainge had seemingly wrestled away the starting position from Rick Clausen, but Ainge played poorly in this hurricane-delayed Monday night contest in Baton Rouge. Clausen relieved him after a three-yard pick six gave LSU a 21-0 lead midway through the second. Clausen didn’t exactly set the world on fire during the remainder of the first half, but he did stop the bleeding. And under his steady guide, the Vols would creep back into it in the second half. After throwing one touchdown (to Bret Smith pictured above) and running for another, Clausen deferred to Wilhoit whose late field goal knotted the score at 24.

Gerald Riggs gained all 25 of the Vols’ yards in the first and only overtime, ten of them courtesy of a Clausen pass. Riggs’ one-yard touchdown on third down gave the Vols a thrilling upset victory over the No. 4 Tigers.
