5. South Carolina 2013

The only game on the list played by a UT team coached by a man NOT named Johnny Majors or Phillip Fulmer. And what a magical game it was. The Vols were coming off a valiant effort against Georgia the week before, an effort that came up but one yard short in overtime, but one that also marked the first tangible evidence that Jones was, in fact, turning things around on Rocky Top.

The Vols D did an incredible job containing South Carolina’s well balanced offensive attack, keeping Connor Shaw at bay, eventually knocking him out of the game late in the fourth. A circus catch by Marquez North on third and ten set the Vols up on the South Carolina 26. Six plays later, Michael Palardy converted on a chip shot to give the un-ranked Vols the unlikely victory over No. 11 South Carolina. And with it, Butch Jones gave the program something it had not had since the Fulmer era. A signature win. As well the widely held belief that better days were coming sooner than later.
