After getting torched last week, Tennessee’s secondary did a much better job this week. The Vols only allowed 69 passing yards to an over-matched ETSU offense, and Bryce Thompson was a star on Saturday. He picked off a pass, had two tackles for loss, and broke up another pass. Alontae Taylor got credit for a pass breakup as well, and both Micah Abernathy and Nigel Warrior didn’t have nearly as many gaffes as last week. Theo Jackson made some nice plays too, and he picked up a TFL.

It’s important to note the competition, but from week one to week two, the secondary made as big a jump as any group on the roster. Specifically, Bryce Thompson. The freshman recorded his first career interception which was a near pick-six, and he also recorded two tackles for a loss. The group as a whole allowed ETSU to just 69 passing yards, a drastic difference from their performance against West Virginia. Nigel Warrior and Micah Abernathy had strong games, while Shawn Shamburger and Theo Jackson received extended playing time for the first time this season and impressed. There were no clear coverage busts, and that’s a step in the right direction.
