Defensive Line

Tennessee’s biggest issues in 2018 were the lines of scrimmage. That remains the case in 2019, apparently.

The Vols’ defensive line was flat out abysmal on Saturday when you consider the competition they were going up against. Georgia State easily ran for over 200 yards as a team, and the defensive line rarely got enough pressure to affect GSU quarterback Dan Ellington consistently. Outside of some decent play from Aubrey Solomon, Savion Williams, and at times Greg Emerson, this unit was pretty appalling to watch. Solomon got a quarterback hit and six tackles, and Emerson picked up half a tackle for loss. Other than that, the defensive line was barely noticeable out there.

Where do we begin? Like the offensive line, the defensive line couldn’t generate a push or pass-rush against a Sun Belt team that won just two games a season ago. The group registered just a half a tackle for a loss and failed to get in the backfield to generate pressure or stop the run. Aubrey Solomon recorded six tackles, but he wasn’t that noticeable out there. Oh, and let’s not forget the group didn’t know where to line up. It was just a huge cluster.

I was told during fall camp that the defensive line was the worst position group on the team by a landslide. Boy, were they correct.

  1. As a kid I growing up in Tennessee, I watched Johnny Majors coaching the Vols. From there the only highlights was Peyton Manning, who never won a championship, and T. Martin who was a one hit wonder.
