Outside of the Vols’ wide receivers, Tennessee’s special teams units were the best on the field on Saturday. Brent Cimaglia was perfect on his field goals, and he nailed a 48-yard attempt late in the third quarter. Marquez Callaway ripped off a nice 35-yard punt return, showing why he was voted a preseason All-SEC performer as a return specialist. Joe Doyle’s lone punt was stellar, as it was boomed for 47 yards and was downed inside the Panthers’ 20-yard line. Unfortunately, Tennessee’s defense couldn’t hold, and Georgia State scored on an 81-yard drive.

Even the Vols’ coverage units on special teams were solid. Georgia State didn’t get off a return on a kick-off or punt the entire game.

It was the only bright spot on Saturday against Georgia State. Without Brent Cimaglia, the Panthers blow out the Vols in the season opener. Cimaglia was 3-for-3, connecting on field goals from 19, 48 and 31 yards out.

Joe Doyle punted once, and it was a beauty. Doyle’s punt landed inside the 20-yard line and traveled 47 yards. Marquez Callaway contributed a big punt return of 35 yards as well.

  1. As a kid I growing up in Tennessee, I watched Johnny Majors coaching the Vols. From there the only highlights was Peyton Manning, who never won a championship, and T. Martin who was a one hit wonder.
