Recruit, recruit, recruit. That’s all Tennessee’s coaches can do at this point to get the Vols anywhere close to being able to compete regularly with the Georgias, Alabamas, and Floridas of the SEC. I thought the coaching was well-served on Saturday. Jeremy Pruitt/Derrick Ansley did a good job of calling the defense, and while some more aggressive blitzing might’ve helped, that also would’ve left UT’s secondary on more islands. The secondary hasn’t proven this season they’re capable of guarding receivers one-on-one with little to no help behind them, so I don’t blame Pruitt and Ansley for not blitzing more. Offensively, Jim Chaney called a good game and helped his true freshman QB settle in quickly. I’m fine with UT not calling more run plays than they did because it’s not like teams have a lot of success running against Georgia’s defense.

As was the case against BYU and Florida, I don’t know what more the coaches could have done. At some point the players have to execute. While it’s been better since the Georgia State game, the execution still isn’t where it needs to be. I thought Jim Chaney and Jeremy Pruitt both put their units in good situations, and had the execution been better, it would have been a closer football game. Simply put, the Vols need more talent.
