Cortez McDowell stepped up as the next man in after Jalen Reeves-Maybin was tossed from the game following a targeting call in the first quarter. McDowell recorded nine total tackles in an impressive relief appearance. Darrin Kirkland Jr. was solid with nine stops as well, while Kenny Byunm saw extensive action as the third linebacker in many sets. Still, this group shoulders some of the blame for App. State’s success, especially on the ground. The Vols lost defensive leverage several times. They weren’t too crisp in tackling either.
