Grading the Vols’ Offseason Coaching Hires

Kevin Beard, WRs Coach

Kevin Beard is the most recent addition to Tennessee’s coaching staff. Zach Azzani accepted the vacant wide receivers coach position for the Chicago Bears in the NFL, and Butch Jones elected to fill Azzani’s vacancy with Beard.

Beard played wide receiver for the Miami Hurricanes from 2001-03 where he caught 67 passes for 920 yards and seven touchdowns. He also earned a national championship ring while with the Hurricanes. Beard has recently coached receivers at Miami in 2015 and was a quality control assistant at Georgia in 2016. He had accepted a job at Florida International in December of 2016 before accepting the job at Tennessee.

Beard isn’t the most experienced hire the Vols could’ve made at the position, but he has great potential and brings energy (he’s only 36 after all) and diversity to the staff. Time will tell if Beard can live up to his potential, but his ceiling is certainly high.
