Larry Scott was hired as Tennessee’s tight ends coach prior to the 2016 season. Fast forward a year, and Scott is now the Vols’ offensive coordinator.

Despite never calling plays at the collegiate level, Butch Jones tabbed Scott to take over as Tennessee’s offensive coordinator once Mike DeBord took the same position at Indiana this offseason. Scott has a solid track record as an assistant and interim head coach at Miami, but he hasn’t called plays since he was the offensive coordinator at Sebring High School in 2004.

Scott has upside, but his inexperience as a play-caller does raise questions. Most of the offensive staff changes this offseason have been about surrounding Scott with people he’s familiar with, so maybe the chemistry on this staff will help lessen Scott’s inexperience.
