Grading the Vols’ Offseason Coaching Hires

Charlton Warren, Defensive Backs

Just like the Kevin Beard hire, Charlton Warren brings a smaller resume but has very high upside. Warren, who just turned 40 a couple months ago, coached at North Carolina the last few seasons as their secondary coach. And he helped the Tarheels achieve the 10th-best passing defense in the entire country in 2016.

Warren coached at Nebraska and Air Force before joining North Carolina, and he has experience as both a defensive backs coach and a defensive coordinator. Warren brings a history of success in his decade of coaching, and the stats back him up.

Tennessee’s secondary was their weakest unit on defense last season. The Vols need a boost for their corners and safeties this season, and Warren could be just the coach to do that.
