Grading the Vols’ Offseason Coaching Hires

Brady Hoke, Defensive Line

Brady Hoke is one of three coaches on Tennessee’s staff who have head coaching experience. Both Canales and Scott served interim roles while Hoke was hired as Ball State’s head coach prior to the 2003 season and has been the head coach at San Diego State and Michigan as well.

But Hoke failed as Michigan’s head coach and was ultimately fired. He was then hired as Oregon’s defensive coordinator, but that lasted just one season before the Ducks fired him from that position as well.

Now Hoke is Tennessee’s defensive line coach and associate head coach. Hoke brings plenty of experience and is known as an elite recruiter, especially for defensive linemen. Time will tell if Hoke is on a complete downward trajectory as a coach or if he’s more suited as an assistant. Tennessee is hoping Hoke succeeds in a less demanding role and helps keep the production high along the defensive line.
