Tennessee landed their 20th commitment from the class of 2024 in elite EDGE rusher Jordan Ross on Monday night.

The native of Birmingham, Alabama announced his commitment via On3 Sports’ commitment show.

“I would like to announce that for the next three to four years I will be committing to…” Ross said during his announcement.

Ross put on the Florida hat at first before saying, “No, this doesn’t feel right,” and then threw on the Tennessee hat.

“We’re going to Tennessee,” Ross said.

Ross gives Tennessee a massive defensive piece to add in the back half of the Vols’ 2024 recruiting cycle. Tennessee beat out Florida, Texas, and Alabama in the race. The high-level prospect took visits to each of his four finalists over the spring and summer.

The 6-foot-4, 230-pound prospect is ranked as a four-star recruit according to Rivals, On3, and ESPN while 247Sports’ rankings have Ross listed as a five-star recruit. 247’s industry-wide composite rankings have Ross as a four-star recruit, the No. 36 player in the class, the No. 4 EDGE rusher in the country, and the No. 5 player from the state of Alabama.

Jordan Ross is now Tennessee’s highest-ranked overall commit in the Vols’ class ahead of five-star wide receiver Mike Matthews according to 247’s rankings. Ross is also Tennessee’s first commitment from the state of Alabama in the class.

A dual-sport athlete, Ross’ length, athleticism, and speed give him an advantage on both the basketball court and the football field for Vestavia Hills High School in Birmingham.

“Displays an explosive first step off the line of scrimmage and flashes outstanding initial foot and body quickness at the point of attack,” 247 Sports National Recruiting Analyst Cooper Petagna wrote in a February evaluation. “Fluid athlete. Shows the ability to bend the edge and possesses good burst-to-close ability. Demonstrates good lateral change of direction ability and exhibits the ability to play in space both on the line of scrimmage and lined up as an off-ball linebacker.”

Ross is Tennessee’s first EDGE commitment in the class of 2024. The Vols hauled in two four-star prospects with Caleb Herring and Chandavian Bradley during the 2023 recruiting cycle and four-star EDGE prospects Joshua Josephs and James Pearce Jr. from the class of 2022. Tennessee is slowly building up a dangerous room of EDGE rushers under the watch of Mike Ekeler, Brian Jean-Mary, and Rodney Garner. This also comes in the midst of a fifth-round draft pick from 2022 Tennessee EDGE rusher Byron Young during the 2023 NFL Draft.
