4. Josh Dobbs
Tennessee’s starting quarterback didn’t have the worst game of his career against Appalachian State, but it was far from his best performance either. In fact, it was pretty far from even a mediocre performance too.
Josh Dobbs finished with 192 passing yards on 16-of-29 passing, tossing a touchdown and a really, really bad interception. He also had the famous fumble at the end zone in overtime that Jalen Hurd recovered for Tennessee’s decisive score. Dobbs also finished with -4 rushing yards on nine attempts, the first time in his career he finished with negative rushing yards in a game.
The Vols’ offense goes as Josh Dobbs goes. And it struggled to get going on Thursday because Dobbs struggled to find consistency as well. Aside from his dreadful interception, Dobbs didn’t have that many bad-looking passes on Thursday. But he was hurried far too often and wasn’t allowed to run the ball, the one thing that makes him more dangerous than most quarterbacks.
Dobbs needs a big bounce back game against Virginia Tech. And the best way for that to happen is to open up the playbook.
